Search the Public Notice Portal A long-closed North East pub could soon be brought back to life under new plans for a bar and restaurant.
A planning application has been submitted to Sunderland City Council for the Hylton Castle Arms on Cranleigh Road, a once-popular venue in Sunderland's Hylton Castle ward that closed in 2023.
The pub, trading under the name since 1959, was sold in 2024 by Christie & Co on behalf of the Robson family, who had owned it for many years.
Now, new proposals include a single-storey side extension, the installation of new openings, new render, associated external alterations, and transforming the forecourt into a terrace area.

The plans are part of a broader vision to reopen the site as a hospitality venue under the name Hylton Bar Restaurant.
A design and access statement submitted with the application suggests the applicant will "restore this derelict building" and create a "new thriving and much-needed restaurant and bar in the heart of the Hylton Castle housing estate".
The statement confirmed that a mechanical ventilation system to the rear of the building had been "thoroughly considered in regard to design, noise and odour."
The proposed opening hours are 12pm to 10pm, seven days a week.
Developers expect to create around four full-time and two part-time staff roles across the two operations if the plans go ahead.
The statement also noted that restaurant food would be "freshly prepared on site every day" and that the development would "use the newest technology to ensure efficiency with energy usage".
Plans include extending the function room, adding external lighting, and installing new signage.

A CCTV system would also be installed both inside and outside the building.
The design and access statement said: "The CCTV will be maintained and operated at all times to ensure safety to the public and staff members."
A decision will be made following a public consultation.
