Partial solar eclipse: Events and places in Leeds to watch the rare event tonight

Yorkshire residents are deciding where to watch the partial solar eclipse on Wednesday evening (August 12).

Many people are travelling to countryside viewpoints, like Buckden Pike, Tan Hill Inn, or Ilkley Moor. However, for those wanting to stay closer to home, there are plenty of organised events in Leeds.

Leeds Astronomical Society

At Roundhay Park, Leeds Astronomical Society is hosting a public viewing event. For safety purposes, the group is providing eclipse glasses and telescopes with solar filters. Guests are invited to join at the “little hill” near the car park on Princes Avenue.

Azotea

Azotea, a rooftop Latin American restaurant on Hyatt Place, is hosting eclipse viewings from its terraces. Access is on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests will need a table reservation between 6pm and 8pm, and a certified pair of eclipse glasses.

Rooftop Social

Opening its doors at 4pm, Rooftop Social is hosting a Leeds Rooftop Solar Eclipse Watch Party. This intimate rooftop venue is located opposite Leeds Town Hall, and attendees will need to bring certified glasses.

Harehills Community Solar Eclipse Watch

At Banstead Park, Harehills Love is organising a community watch event. With the eclipse starting at 6:19pm, attendees are encouraged to arrive early and bring certified glasses. Attendees without glasses will learn how to make pinhole cameras to view the phenomenon safely.

Otley Science Festival

For anyone scrambling to buy solar eclipse glasses, Otley Science Festival is handing out pairs between 10am and 1pm, or until stock lasts. This informative event is taking place at Otley Market Square, on the outskirts of Leeds. Visitors can combine the event with a visit to Otley Chevin, considered one of the best places in Yorkshire to watch the eclipse.
