The former home of an esteemed writer has hit the market in North Yorkshire – for £3.5 million.
Stonegrave House in the village of Stonegrave, between Malton and Helmsley, is for sale.
The 17 century Grade II-listed property was the home of Sir Herbert Read, the art critic and writer, during the mid-20th century. The house was occasionally opened to the public in support of charitable causes while Sir Herbert lived there.

Inside, a main entrance leads to a central hallway with access to the principal rooms.
The kitchen/breakfast room combines “historic charm with modern fittings”, according to Hudson Moody, which is marketing the property.
Adjoining spaces to the kitchen include a pantry, scullery and booth room with easy access to the garage.

Meanwhile, south-facing reception rooms include a snug with a wood burner, a dining room, and a drawing room with floor-to-ceiling windows and a marble fireplace.
There is also a cellar which Hudson Moody said is “ideal for wine storage or a gym”.
Upstairs, six bedrooms are on the first floor, including the main suite with dressing rooms and a luxurious bathroom.
There is also a family bathroom, guest suite and a large family room on the first floor.
Two more bedrooms and further living space can be found on the top floor.

Hudson Moody said a “fine collection of Georgian outbuildings complements the main house”. These include a former coach house, stables, and service rooms.
