One of York’s waste collection team has been injured by a needle that was left sticking out of a bag in an overfilled bin.
The council is now asking everyone who uses needles at home – including for weight loss medication or other treatments – to make sure they’re disposed of safely and not put into your household waste.
If you use needles or other sharps, please use the clinical and medical waste collection service to dispose of them safely.
Putting them in your household rubbish, even inside a bag, can put the people collecting your waste at risk of injury.

The council is also asking you not to overfill your bins. If the lid won’t close properly, waste can become trapped or sharp items can push through bags, making collections more dangerous for crews.
