Residents of Woodthorpe in York have welcomed news that Post Office counter services are to resume shortly in the new Budgens on Moorcroft Road.
When the Morrisons Daily store closed on 1 August, residents were left without a local convenience store and without access to Post Office services.
It has now been confirmed that the retailer Budgens will open a store at the Moorcroft Road premises, with a Grand Opening planned for 10am on Saturday (15 August).
Post Office services will then resume a few weeks later.
Local Lib Dem councillors launched a petition calling on Post Office Ltd to retain counter services in Woodthorpe, which was backed by 368 residents.
Cllr Stephen Fenton said: “This is great news for Woodthorpe and I’d like to thank everyone who has backed the campaign to keep local Post Office counter services.
“Budgens will be a great addition to the local area and I know that residents are pleased to have a convenience store on the doorstep.
“I’d also like to thank the team at Inskin Aesthetics & Beauty on Moorcroft Road who have done a fantastic job clearing the overgrown flower beds and giving the area around the shops a proper tidy-up.
“It’s great to see the power of volunteering make a real difference and create a clean and welcoming environment, which can only be good for business.”
