A York road will shut for three weeks for resurfacing from next Monday.
Now City of York Council is asking people to be aware, and find alternative routes if necessary.
Beckfield Lane is will close from Monday 17 August and be shut throughout the day, from 8am to 5pm.

The road will reopen each evening, unless there are “exceptional circumstances”, the council says. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
Beckfield Lane will also be open each weekend and on the August Bank Holiday Monday (31 August).
Access will always be maintained into Ostman Road, with temporary lights being used to facilitate this.
Acomb Cllr Jason Rose said: “The total length of road is over 1.1km so it’s a massive
job, and it’s full multi layer resurfacing so it includes large construction vehicles including 40 ton planers and requires the full closure to be in effect for the new road to fully cure, so obviously this has a big effect on the local area.”
Two phases of work
The work will be done in two phases.
- Phase 1 – Wetherby Road to Ostman Road starts onMonday 17 August and is expected to finish by the end of Monday 24 August. Access to Ostman Road will be from Boroughbridge Road end of Beckfield Lane;
- Phase 2 – Ostman Road to the junction of Lidgett Grove will start onTuesday 25 August and is expected to finish by 5pm on Friday 4 September. Access to Ostman Road will be from the Wetherby Road end of Beckfield Lane.
Diversions
Cars
Between 8am and 5pm on weekdays, there will be no car access through the road closure.
If it is safe to do so the road will reopen each day at 5pm and close again at 8am the next weekday morning. The road will be open all evening.
When the road is closed, the diversion route will be via the A59 Boroughbridge Road, Carr Lane and B1224 Wetherby Road.
Access will be maintained at all times into Ostman Road for local residents, with temporary lights being used to facilitate this.
During phase 1: Access to Ostman Road will be from the Boroughbridge Road end of Beckfield Lane.
During phase 2: Access to Ostman Road will be from the Wetherby Road end of Beckfield Lane
Additional information: Carers and residents who need transport to medical appointments will be allowed through the closure. Businesses who need deliveries during these times should contact the council via [email protected].
Buses
Buses will continue to operate as usual until 9.30am. After that time, bus services will be diverted until the road reopens at 5pm, so please plan ahead and allow extra time to travel.
Phase 1: The 5A will divert via Ostman Rd, Danebury Drive, Wetherby Rd to Ridgeway, not serving the closed southern section of Beckfield Lane. Stops not served: Turnberry Drive, Beckfield Place or Runswick Ave. The 5 bus stays on the normal route (Ostman Rd, Danebury Drive).
For those who use the bus stops within the closure the council suggests using Ostman Rd, Acomb Green or Ridgeway stops during the first phase.
Phase 2: The number 5 will divert via Carr Lane, Almsford Rd, Woodlea Ave and Danebury Drive to The Green. The 5A will divert via Carr Lane, Almsford Rd, Woodlea Ave, Danebury Drive and Ostman Rd to the southern part of Beckfield Lane.
Stops not served by the 5/5A but will be served by the number 10: Boroughbridge Rd between Carr Lane and Beckfield Lane (Ouse Acres/Cranbrook Ave, Plantation Drive, Wheatlands Grove, Low Poppleton Lane).
Stops on the closed section of Beckfield Lane that will also not be served (Beckfield Lane End, Norman Drive). Anyone boarding the diverted service 5A on Ostman Rd should use the stop on the opposite side of the road to their usual direction of travel.
For those who use the bus stops within the closure the council suggests using Boroughbridge Rd (Malvern Ave) or any stop on Ostman Rd during the second phase of works.
Cyclists
Diversions will be in place via the A59 Boroughbridge Road, Carr Lane and B1224 Wetherby Road during both phases of the works.
During phase 1: Access to Ostman Road will be possible from Boroughbridge Road end of Beckfield Lane.
During phase 2: Access to Ostman Road will be possible from the Wetherby Road end of Beckfield Lane
Pedestrians
Pedestrians and those using mobility aids will continue to be able to use the newly resurfaced footways in the area.
Crossing points will be in place while the work takes place so, “please follow the signage and advice of our teams,” the council says.
Access to businesses and other properties in the area will always be maintained.

Councillor Kate Ravilious, executive member for transport at City of York Council, said: “Having already completed significant road resurfacing works at Bishopthorpe, Osbaldwick and Monks Cross, amongst many others across the city, we continue to deliver our record programme of planned Highways Maintenance works for 2026/27 alongside emergency repairs.
“We’re responsible for over 500 miles of roads across the city and maintaining them is crucial in helping everyone to get around the city efficiently.
“We’re grateful for everyone’s patience while our contractors get this work done. Businesses in the area are very much open for business and we encourage residents to continue supporting them through this period”.
