Police are investigating reports of racist, sexual and misogynistic messages daubed along a stretch of the A64 in North Yorkshire.
The graffiti has appeared on bus-shelters, fences, junction boxes and buildings along 10 miles of the road between West Knapton and Staxton Hill over the past six months, North Yorkshire Police said.
A force spokesperson said it has investigated “a number of similar incidents over several years” but it is believed there are “more incidences recently than we are aware of”.
They said the force is urging anyone with information about the graffiti, including those who have helped to clean it up, to get in touch.
The police spokesperson said “community-minded members of the public” have cleaned the graffiti “as soon as they’ve become aware of it, and in some cases, it has not been reported to us”.
They added: “If you see any incidents of graffiti, or have any information about who is responsible, please report it to the police as soon as you can and take a photograph if possible.”
Anyone with information is asked to phone 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 12260078234.
