A NEW shop and Post Office counter is set to open in a York suburb later this week.

Budgens is set to open a new shop on Moorcroft Road in Woodthorpe on Saturday (August 15) at 10am - complete with new Post Office services for the area

The news comes after the closure of Morrisons Daily store which left residents without access to essential counter services since August 1.

Cllr Stephen Fenton said that the announcement is great news for the area.

He said: "I’d like to thank everyone who has backed the campaign to keep local Post Office counter services.

"Budgens will be a great addition to the local area and I know that residents are pleased to have a convenience store on the doorstep."

Local Lib Dem councillors launched a petition calling on Post Office Ltd to retain counter services in Woodthorpe, which was backed by 368 residents.

Stephen added: "I’d also like to thank the team at Inskin Aesthetics & Beauty on Moorcroft Road who have done a fantastic job clearing the overgrown flower beds and giving the area around the shops a proper tidy-up.

“It’s great to see the power of volunteering make a real difference and create a clean and welcoming environment, which can only be good for business.”

Post Office services will then resume a few weeks later once the onboarding process has been completed.
