Drivers who used dead man's name to try and avoid speeding offences handed suspended sentences

Four drivers who used the name of a dead man in an attempt to avoid being brought to justice have been handed suspended sentences.

The two men and two women, who were unknown to each other, used details of a man who had died in 2001 to try and avoid prosection after being caught speeding and running red lights.

But the quartet have now been sentenced after being snared by police investigators.

West Yorkshire Police said the four people all submitted details of the driver in relation to five separate traffic offences between July 16, 2020 and April 21, 2024.

They were caught out by the force’s prosecutions and casualty prevention unit, who tried to trace the details of the man only to discover he had died more than 20 years ago.

Those convicted were:

• Sarah Hanif, aged 33, of Great Russell Street, Bradford. She was sentenced on August 7 to a 12 months in prison (suspended for two years) for committing an act/series of acts with intent to pervert the course of public justice. The 33-year-old admitted submitting the man’s details after her vehicle activated a red light camera on the A58 on Clay Pit Lane, Leeds, on July 16 2020. She must also carry out 150 hours unpaid work.

• Ajmal Khan, aged 32, of Middleton Crescent, Leeds. He was sentenced on August 7 to eight months in prison (suspended for two years) for committing an act/series of acts with intent to pervert the course of public justice . Khan admitted submitting the man’s details when his vehicle was caught travelling at 60mph in a 40mph zone on Stanningley Road on September 6, 2020.

• Shahad Aljammoor, aged 37 of Carr Bottom Avenue, Bradford. She was sentenced on August 5 to 15 months in prison (suspended for two years) two counts of committing an act/series of acts with intent to pervert the course of public justice. In an offence on July 2, 2022, her silver BMW X5 was caught travelling at 64mph in a 50mph zone. Then, in a second offence on the April 21, 2024, a red Audi A3 she was driving activated a speed camera on New York Road, Leeds traveling at 50mph in a 40mph limit.

• Naheed Razaq, aged 49, of Avenel Terrace, Bradford . He was sentenced on August 7 to six months in prison (suspended for two years) for committing an act/series of acts with intent to pervert the course of public justice. Razaq admitted submitting the man’s details after his Mercedes C250 was caught travelling at 80mph on the M1 northbound on December 13, 2020.

Rachel Wainwright, of West Yorkshire Police’s digital submission and investigation team, said: “We welcome the sentencing of all four of these people who attempted to blame a deceased man to try and escape justice for offences committed in their vehicles.

“Instead, all have been brought to justice for their deceit and their waste of valuable time and resource in what has been really shameful offending.
