TRAVELLERS who camped in a York playing fields have been served a notice to leave by the council.
City of York Council said it served Travellers the warning to leave Chesney Fields in Foxwood Lane on Monday (August 10).
The community has until Wednesday (August 12) to leave, the council said.
A spokesperson said: “Our teams have met with the Traveller community there, and we understand that some have already left, with others planning to leave over the next day.”
It came after Travellers were seen pitching up on the field, which includes a children’s play area and space for local football groups, over the weekend.
Westfield Ward councillor Andrew Waller said this had been followed by a visit to the site by North Yorkshire Police.
Entrance to the fields has been made through a gap in low fencing, he confirmed.
He added: “I’m following through the issue.
“Chesney Fields is used for recreation, and the football team needs to use it.”
It comes after a previous unauthorised occupation of the site by Travellers in May this year, April 2025 and July 2024.
