There was a major emergency service response to an incident at York Minster this afternoon.
Multiple fire engines and ambulances were deployed to the cathedral.
The piazza was closed off to the public and guarded by police. The cordon has now been lifted.
A person had become unwell while on the South Transept roof.
Both firefighters and paramedics were lifted onto the roof via the fire service aerial platform.
The person was treated in situ for some time, before being brought back down to the piazza pavement.
The Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which landed at Botham Park, was set to airlift them to hospital.
York Minster issued this statement: “Earlier today, emergency services were called to York Minster following a medical incident involving a visitor at the top of the Central Tower.
“The individual is receiving medical attention, and we are working closely with the emergency services, including the fire service and air ambulance team, to support their response and facilitate a safe evacuation.
“As a precaution, areas around the Minster have been temporarily cordoned off while emergency operations take place. We are grateful to visitors, residents, and businesses for their patience and understanding while this incident is managed.
“The welfare of the individual remains our primary concern. Out of respect for their privacy and that of their family, we will not be providing further personal details at this time.
“We would like to thank the emergency services for their swift and professional response.”
The incident is now over. York Minster remained open throughout.
