A NEW support group in a York suburb is bringing comfort and community closer to home for those affected by cancer.
Launched by Moira Sykes and four women from Acomb with lived experience of cancer, the group offers a welcoming space for anyone affected by a diagnosis.
Based at the suburb's Explore Library, the group was created in response to a lack of nearby support options - particularly for those unable to travel easily to established centres elsewhere in York.

The founders explained that the distance to resources like the Leveson Centre felt like a 'mammoth undertaking' during treatment, especially without transport, so they partnered with York Against Cancer to launch a more accessible option for people in the west of York.
Moira said: "We are a group of 5 ladies who have shared experience of a Cancer diagnosis and who are at different stages of our own personal journeys.
"We all live in and around the Acomb area and we found that there are no local facilities that offer support of any kind.
"YAC (York Against Cancer) and the Leveson Centre have been pivotal supporting us set up this up."
The aim of the group is to create a friendly environment where people can connect, share information, and learn about additional services - with support extended not only to cancer patients but also to families and carers.
Moira added: "We absolutely understand how a diagnosis of any kind can be isolating and lonely, not only to the person with the diagnosis but also to the families and carers and we are inclusive to all.

"Our vision is that anyone who walks through our door will feel welcomed and can chat over a cuppa.
"We also understand how important information sharing is and are hoping to inform and gather further knowledge of the support that is out there, either locally or nationally for people to tap into when they feel they are ready."
The group has already received strong backing from York City Council, the Acomb Wards, and numerous local businesses - including donations of biscuits from Morrisons and cakes from Ruby’s Café
Early feedback from visitors has been also overwhelmingly positive, with one attendee saying: "These ladies are doing a great job, they are very friendly and welcoming, I look forward to seeing them again on the 20th of August and meet other gents and ladies"
Parking is available close by and the group is held on a main route to ensure its accessible for all, with attendees encouraged to look for the group’s orange T-shirts.
The next meeting will be on August 20 - from 10.30am to 12.30pm - in Room 4 of Acomb Library with monthly meetings to follow.
