Yorkshire Water apologises after thousands of customers, care homes and holiday park have low or no supplies

Bottled water is being delivered to care homes and vulnerable households after two burst mains affected supplies across south-west Holderness.

Yorkshire Water apologised after people in villages including Preston, Patrington and Bilton, east of Hull had low or no water supply after two bursts in quick succession amid higher-than-usual demand due to the warm weather. Withernsea Sands Holiday Park, 11 miles away, had to close its facilities, after it lost its water supply.

The first burst main happened close to Sandhill Garden Centre on Sunday, followed later by a burst outside All Saint’s Church, Preston, which left a large hole in the road.

Parish council chairman Ian Ireland said the burst main “just washed the road away”, with the water running down Staithes Road, hundreds of yards away. He said drivers trying to get through the village had been getting “irate” with Yorkshire Water workers, who had closed the road.

“That’s not going to achieve anything. They are just trying to fix it as quickly as possible,” he said. "All we can do is sit back and let the guys with the skills get on with it.”

Yorkshire Water apologised, saying they appreciated that it was “extremely frustrating” and they are working as quickly as possible to do the repairs.

A statement said: "Bottled water deliveries are underway for our priority services register customers and pallets of water have been delivered to Sandhill Nursery, Preston and Highfield Caravan Park. Water is also being delivered to a number of care homes in the affected area.

“A road closure and signed diversion is currently in place at Main Street, Preston so that the mains repairs can be done as safely and as quickly as we can.

"Our focus is to have this repair completed, backfilled and removed as soon as possible.”

People can pick up bottled water at East Riding Leisure Centre overflow car park in Withernsea.

Customers are advised to run taps to get rid of discoloured water once the water supply and pressure resumes.
