Police recover knife after man dies following stabbing in seaside resort

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man died in hospital following a stabbing in Bridlington.

Officers were called to an address on First Avenue in Bridlington at 5.20am on Monday, following an altercation between two men, who were known to each other.

One of the men was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he died. Police are trying to trace his next of kin.

A man, 24, who was detained nearby, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Leanne Murphy, who said: “Since we received the report this morning, officers were immediately deployed and have been conducting extensive house to house, and CCTV enquiries, as well as obtaining witness statements to determine the full circumstances around the incident.

“Whilst we are in the very early stages of our investigation, from our enquiries so far, we have established that an altercation is believed to have occurred between the two men, who are thought to be associated to one another, leading to one of the men being taken to hospital for treatment to life threatening injuries.

“Despite the efforts of medical professionals, the man has since died in hospital, and enquiries remain ongoing to formally identify him, and therefore identify and locate his next of kin.

"We would ask people to please refrain from speculating around the circumstances surrounding the incident at this time.

“A 24-year-old man was detained nearby shortly after we received the report and has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

"He remains in hospital after also sustaining minor injuries as a result of the altercation.

“A knife has also since been recovered as part of our enquiries so far.

“I would like to thank members of the public who have already greatly assisted us in our enquiries and prompt arrest of a man in connection with the incident, and the local community can expect to continue to see an increased police presence in the area.

“Multiple scene guards remain in place on Flamborough Road, First Avenue, and Alexandra Promenade, as our investigation continues and Crime Scene Investigations carry out their enquiries, and we would ask people to continue to avoid the area where possible.
