'Much-loved' York pub to reopen tomorrow after two-year hiatus

A much-loved York pub is set to re-open at lunchtime tomorrow (Tue).

The Wellington Inn on Alma Terrace in Fishergate will open at 12 noon, according to Google.

A sign in the pub also speaks of the Sam Smith’s Brewery-owned pub re-opening on August 11.

The re-opening comes after nearly two years of closure, following the departure of popular landlady Sue Frost in November 2024. This led to a petition from locals to re-instate her to the role.

The pub has since been renovated, with a lick of paint. Recruitment for staff has also begun, as previously reported by The Press.

Now, according to posts on social media on sites devoted to following the activities of the Tadcaster-based brewery, a couple from Pontefract will be joint managers.

Henry and Isabel Smith previously ran the highly acclaimed and award-winning Robin Hood Inn, one of the oldest public houses in Pontefract. Henry also ran the Henry Smith Brewery, which is no longer in business.

The Press has attempted to contact the pub, but the phoneline said the inbox was full. Until today, a recording would say the pub was closed and asked anyone wanting to run it to contact the brewery.

The re-opening of the Wellington Inn follows other pubs owned by Sam Smith’s Brewery.

The Red Lion at Bramham, reopened on July 29.

The Tankard at Rufford, reopened on July 22.

In May, The Blacksmith Arms at Skelton and the Ebor Inn at Bishopthorpe reopened.

In January, the Castle Inn at Sheriff Hutton also reopened.

And later this month, the ‘flagship’ Angel and White Horse in Bridge Street, Tadcaster, situated right next to the brewery, is also said to be re-opening.
