One of York’s Wetherspoon pubs is shut this week for a refurb.
The Postern Gate on Piccadilly is shut from today (Monday) right through till Friday.
It is due to reopen on Saturday (15 August), in plenty of time for the Ebor race meeting the following week.
A banner hung under the sign of the pub announced the closure, and directed patrons to their nearest alternative Wetherspoon pubs.
These are the Punch Bowl on Blossom Street, the Giant Bellflower on Gowthorpe, Selby, and the Angel Inn on Wetherby High Street.
The company says the refurbishment includes some minor updates.
Last month, JD Wetherspoon reported slower-than-expected sales growth and issued a profit warning.
The British pub chain recorded sales growth of four per cent in the three months to July 19, compared with the same period last year.
Founder and chairman Tim Martin told investors: “Profits for the year are likely to be below market expectations, with marginally lower sales than anticipated in the final quarter, combined with higher costs in the areas of food, labour, repairs, energy and business rates.”
Susannah Streeter, chief investment strategist at Wealth Club, said: “Customers are still coming through the doors, with like-for-like sales continuing to grow, but the bars weren’t quite as busy as hoped in the final quarter.
“Even cheaper pints can only go so far in luring consumers who remain cautious about everyday spending.”
