‘Hammer wielding youths’ smash up cars in York village

Police are investigating a wrecking spree targeting cars in a York village.

It happened on Friday night (7 August) in New Earswick.

The criminal damage happened in Hawthorn Terrace North, said resident Mal Bell.

Villagers reported being woken by car alarms going off in the early hours.

Mal posted on Facebook: “Several vehicles were damaged apparently by two youths wearing balaclavas on a moped with a hammer.”

He told YorkMix it happened at around 4am. “The police have told me that ten vehicles were involved.”

Another villager reported: “They almost caused an accident on the link road overtaking dangerously on a quad bike and moped.

“The passenger looked like he was videoing it on a mobile. All wearing balaclavas.”

According to another resident, on Saturday there were “several lads out and about… wearing black balaclavas, riding e bikes at speed, spread all over the road, doing wheelies.”
