Tiny Harrogate record label's new project will see first ever repress of Leeds Utd's most famous single
A small but incredibly successful independent Harrogate record label is hoping to hit the top of the charts with the first ever repress of the Leeds United’s classic Marching On Together single.
Barrel And Squidger Records may only be a tiny indie label but this remarkable one-man operation has earned a reputation for punching well above its weight since its founder Jason Hodgson established it in 2017.
In that time, it has worked with some of the biggest names in rock music, including members of Status Quo, Sex Pistols, The Wildhearts and more, scoring four Top 10 hits on the Official UK Physical Singles Chart, with three of them reaching number two.
The latest project by Barrel And Squidger Records, which took its name from a pub quiz team at Harrogate’s Coach & Horses, may just be the one that gets them to that number one spot.
Jason Hodgson said he was “chuffed to announce” that it had officially licenced Marching On Together (Leeds, Leeds, Leeds) and Leeds United – the original 1972 recordings by the Leeds United Football Team – for a 7" vinyl reissue.
It is the first repress of the Marching On Together single since it peaked at number 10 on the UK Singles Chart in 1972.
"We've really mixed it among the big boys in previous campaigns, beating some huge major artists with backing from billion-dollar corporations,” said the label’s founder.
"We're confident of a sizeable hit this time around, too.”
Jason Hodgson, a Leeds Utd fan himself, said the single would be pressed on Leeds United colours – white, yellow or blue vinyl – and is now available to pre-order for a short period of time
"For the first time in 54 years, the tracks have been paired together as a modern reproduction of the original Top 10 hit single,” said Jason.
"We'll run the pre-order for 10 days and, if it tops the minimum sales we're contracted to produce as a term of the licence, it will close on 17 August - or earlier if we've reached our maximum limit.
"People can order white, yellow or blue vinyl and they will all be individually numbered to create a genuine limited edition collectors' item.”
The forthcoming release on Barrel And Squidger Records is a new type of venture for the label - officially licencing vintage material, repackaging it and running a short 10-day pre-order window, then manufacturing to order in time for Christmas.
The hit single was written by Les Reed and Barry Mason and featured uncredited backing from 10cc members including Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart.
It remains an Elland Road favourite to this day.
