Travellers have pitched up on playing fields in York.

City of York Council’s enforcement team were due to serve legal notice for the group to leave Chesney Fields in Foxwood Lane on Monday morning (August 10).

The Travellers arrived on the playing fields, used by a local football club, over the weekend.

Westfield ward councillor Andrew Waller said police had visited Chesney Fields where entrance had been made through a gap in low fencing, which is how Travellers previously entered the site in May.

“I’m following through the issue,” he told The Press. “[Chesney Fields] is used for recreation and the football team needs to use it.”

Westfield ward Liberal Democrats said Cllr Waller is “pressing for answers to what steps were taken from the last visit to prevent a repeat so soon”.

The incidents follow similar unauthorised traveller camps at Chesney Fields in April last year and July 2024.
