I'm an ex-funeral director - the industry needs regulators: Yorkshire Post Letters

It was good to read the Tuesday’s Yorkshire Post leader column commending the commitment and care given every day of the year by the vast majority of funeral directors.

I have been involved with funeral directing for over 50 years. I have seen many changes but not in the intention of funeral directors of good reputation to assist families at their time of bereavement.

Of recent time I noticed a 'start-up' firm offering both services in funerals and also the art of tattoos.........that is exactly why regulation is desirable.

Funeral directors of good standing (the firm which bears my name was founded in 1842) will welcome a measured degree of regulation to ensure that in the future no family is subjected to the trauma outlined in the Yorkshire Post comment piece.

So Mr Bush the cheating undertaker has been the fiddle for a long time and has stolen thousands from charity money donated by mourners.

The fact that he was throwing cash about on holidays and other luxury things should have rung a bell. One does have to wonder if there are other undertakers on the fiddle with money donated to charity. Regulation will solve the leaving of bodies to rot but other matters will take some work to make sure all is well.

The sooner the better will be needed to reassure families who will take some time to trust others with their dead.
