Pop legends bring iconic hits and camp fun to North Yorkshire venue

AS a child in the early 2000s, Scissor Sisters are a particularly special band for me.

They were the soundtrack of my favourite video games – fuelling hours upon hours of Singstar karaoke sessions (sorry mum and dad!), the background music to Tony Hawk Pro Skater, plus time spent taking over the TV to use the dance mat.

Having missed out on their tour in Leeds last year, I was delighted to see that they were performing at the Scarborough Open Air Theatre on August 8 and even more delighted after the fact that their performance lived up the hype that I’d created for it.

Kicking off the night, there were two support acts – The Hidden Cameras, who I hadn’t heard before, but set the scene for the night well with an avant-garde pop sound, who were followed by modern gay icon – Bimini of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Whilst I am a fan of Bimini, I was hoping that she would be performing a DJ set instead of a live show – something which I think would have better suited the atmosphere of the evening.

Nonetheless, her styling was on point and her performance was a lot of fun to watch – setting up the vibes for a great night.

In between sets, the crowd kept the vibes high with pink cowboy hats and glitter as far as the eye can see as strangers befriended one another and enjoyed the warm evening.

Having attended gigs at the Open Air before, the venue itself is one of my favourites, in part due to how well organised it is - with quick bar and toilet queues – as this makes such a difference to the experience on the night.

The layout also means that you don’t miss out on the show nipping to the bar and you can get a good view of the stage from almost any angle – ideal!

Coming on stage at 9.15pm exactly, the Scissor Sisters kicked off their performance on a high note with I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ followed by Laura – two songs which immediately set the tone for a high energy set and got the audience ready to dance.

Taking the crowd through a catalogue of some of their biggest hits from the 2000s (and you realise quickly that there is a lot of them!), Jake Shears had no issues filling the arena with powerful vocals and the fun, campy staging brought a fantastic atmosphere to Scarborough.

Rattling through some of their catchiest and best-known hits, the set continued with She’s My Man, Tits on the Radio, and the devious I Can’t Decide, before the trio dropped what is arguably their biggest banger – Take Your Mama.

It seems the audience were just as excited as I was for this one as whilst the music was good, the crowd sang along no matter what!

The set took a slight dip in my eyes when the group performed their cover of Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb, but recovered quickly with Fire with Fire and the iconic Let’s Have A Kiki – which had everyone singing at the top of their voices to ‘let you have it’.

Throughout the set, the atmosphere was electric and as the band played out the crowd with Filthy/Gorgeous followed by Music is The Victim, you were sent off into the night thinking that this kiki was truly marvellous.
