Travellers have returned to a York playing fields, just over ten weeks since they were evicted from the same site.
They have pitched on Chesney Fields off Foxwood Lane.
A group of Travellers are now occupying part of the site having driven on through a gap in the low perimeter fence.
It was the same method used when Travellers moved onto Chesney Fields on 19 May.
On that occasion they left a week later after being served an eviction notice by City of York Council.
There then followed a full clean-up of the playing fields.
On a Facebook post, Westfield Ward Lib Dems said: “Residents have been in touch with Cllr Andrew Waller about the unauthorised visitors on Chesneys Field.
“He has been down to the field, at the time that the police visited. The council’s Neighbourhood Enforcement Team have been informed to take the appropriate legal action.
“Entry was made by the same point in the gap in the low fencing as happened last time. Cllr Waller is pressing for answers to what steps were taken from the last visit to prevent a repeat so soon.”
Sim Balk Lane site
Meanwhile another group of Travellers moved onto a field off Sim Balk Lane to the south of York College yesterday.
Dringhouses and Woodthorpe Ward Liberal Democrat Cllr Stephen Fenton said the council, college and All Saints School have been made aware.
He said it looks like the field was accessed via two metal gates – one next to the All Saints School changing rooms on Sim Balk Lane, and then a second gate at the field entrance.
In a blog post, Cllr Fenton wrote: “There was a similar incident in the summer of 2023 when wooden gates and fences were broken to gain access to the playing fields.
“York College and All Saints School subsequently made a significant investment in metal gates and railings which, until now, have kept the playing fields safe.”
