Roundhay Park: Council to press ahead with installing barriers to deter nuisance drivers

The council is set to press ahead with installing barriers and bollards to deter nuisance drivers in the city’s biggest park.

Leeds City Council said Soldiers Field and Connaught Field at the Grade II-listed park were at risk from vehicle damage.

Dozens of letters of support were received after people living near the historic park were consulted.

A council report said: “There have been 52 comments in support of the proposals, all broadly in agreement that something needs to be done to prevent unauthorised incursions onto the fields.”

The project is set to include 125 sandstone boulders, seven bollards and 900 metres of earth mounding.

Five vehicle barriers would be installed to prevent access to the two fields.

The report said the installations would be designed to blend in with their surroundings.

It said: “The nature of the works are such that they will be essentially indiscernible to the casual user of the park.”

The report said the boulders would be locally-sourced and the earth mounds seeded with grass and wildflowers.

It said: “Once the vegetation has established itself over the mounds the perception of them is likely to be negligible.”

“Overall it is not considered that the proposals will be harmful to heritage assets.”
