A MAJOR bridge in York is set to close again next week for essential resurfacing works.
Lendal Bridge will be closed to vehicles from 8pm to 6am next Wednesday (August 12) to allow essential road resurfacing to take place safely.
The overnight closure follows works in March, when the bridge was closed for three days from St Leonard’s Place to Station Road - also for resurfacing work.
The bridge will reopen to vehicles as normal at 6am on the morning of Thursday, August 13.
Pedestrians and mobility aid users will still be able to use the pavements and cross the bridge at all times during the works, and access to businesses will remain unrestricted.
City of York Council has published travel advice and diversion maps on its website and has sent notification letters to nearby residents and businesses.
A spokesman for the council said: "As with any construction work, there is likely to be a certain amount of disruption and inconvenience, but everything reasonably possible will be done to keep this to a minimum."
Cyclists travelling towards the railway station from the city centre will be diverted via Blake Street, Davygate, Parliament Street, High Ousegate, Low Ousegate, Bridge Street, Micklegate, George Hudson Street, and Rougier Street.
In the opposite direction, the diversion will follow Rougier Street, George Hudson Street, Micklegate, Bridge Street, Low Ousegate, Spurriergate, Coney Street, and Lendal.
All other vehicles will be diverted along Station Road, Queen Street, Blossom Street, Holgate Road (A59), Poppleton Road, Water End Bridge (A1176), Clifton (A19), and Bootham to the Gillygate junction.
Buses will continue to operate but some routes will be diverted from 8pm while the bridge is closed to traffic.
Lendal will remain open and during the closure period, the ‘no right turn’ rule at the exit of the road will be temporarily lifted to maintain Blue Badge holder access at all times.
Emergency services will have full access through the works throughout the closure.
The resurfacing will be carried out by Lane Rentals, who will be responsible for on-site safety during the works.
