THE owners of a family-run shop with a 180 year history have hit back at rumours they are closing.
Fox's Butchers in Market Place Malton, has been run by the same family for generations, however since the death of Derek Fox in June, stories have begun circulating saying the shop is shutting down.
Melanie Wright, who has run Fox's with her brother Shaun, said the rumours were untrue and very hurtful.
She said: "Shaun and myself are upset and hurt about this rumour. Whoever has started it needs to stop. It has been upsetting enough losing dad without these untrue and hurtful rumours.
"We will carry on his legacy and successful business and we are staying open."
Derek Fox, former owner of Fox’s Butchers in Market Place, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, aged 85.
The shop has been in the family since the late 19th century, passing from Derek’s grandfather, George Stephenson, to his uncles John and Billy.
When his uncles retired in 1972, Derek was given the opportunity to buy the shop, which became Derek Fox’s Butchers.
Derek ran the business, carrying out a number of changes and modernisation until 2013.
The shop is now run by Shaun and Melanie, continuing more than 180 years of history.
