Bakery named North Yorkshire's best for second year running

A bakery with a reputation for its delicious steak pies is celebrating after being crowned the best in North Yorkshire for the second year running.

Family owned Phillipe's Bakery in Sackville Street in Skipton, beat off fierce competition from 200 businesses, including 50 finalists, to be presented with the award for 'Best Bakery' at the England's Business Awards regional ceremony, held at the Queens Hotel, Leeds.

It means that the bakery will now go forward to the national final due to take place in Birmingham in November when it will be up against 10 other regional finalists and could be crowned the best in the whole of England.

It's the icing on the cake for the business which was set up 49 years ago by husband and wife, Philip and Yvonne Quinlan, and which is now run by their son, Wayne and his wife, Laura. And the business has a solid future with Wayne and Laura's son, 18 year old Owen, already in the bakehouse as the third generation of bakers.

Phillipe's, which uses traditional, old-style recipes, has a loyal following of customers who can't get enough of its signature steak pies and Yorkshire teacakes.

"We are absolutely overjoyed to have won the award for a second year in a row, although it honestly hasn’t quite sunk in yet," said owners Wayne and Laura.

"This achievement would not have been possible without our incredible, hardworking staff and our wonderfully loyal customers who support us week in and week out. We want to say a massive thank you to everyone."

Following last year's success at the awards, which sees people nominating their favourite businesses, Laura and Wayne spent money on the bakery, refitting the shop with modern fridges and new pie warmers to keep their popular bakes fresh.

However, one much loved feature has stayed put - the bakery's original turning shelf in the front window, believed to be at least 99 years old.

Looking ahead, the family is next planning to modernise the bakehouse, and as they prepare to go head-to-head with the very best bakeries in the country, they are hoping their customers and the wider Skipton community will join in the public vote and help them bring home the title of Best Bakery in England.

"Every bit of local support makes a massive difference ahead of the November finals," say Wayne and Laura.
