Police are using a unique technology to crackdown on crimes involving e-bikes in York.
Officers are using SelectaDNA forensic marking spray to identify e-bikes used in crimes across the city.
The spray is used to mark the bicycles to link offenders to the crimes.
It provides an “additional tool to support evidence gathering and offender identification”, a police spokesperson said.
They said North Yorkshire Police has “embraced innovative technology and collaborative working with forces across the country” to tackle offences involving e-bikes.
“Working alongside policing partners, we have been sharing learning and best practice around emerging technologies, including forensic marking solutions that help identify offenders and strengthen investigations,” the police spokesperson said.

They added that the technology is used alongside high-visibility police patrols “targeting antisocial e-bike use across the city”.
“These dedicated operations focus on areas where concerns have been raised by residents and businesses, with officers engaging with riders, promoting safe and lawful use, and taking enforcement action where offences are identified,” the police spokesperson said.
“The patrols have provided reassurance to local communities while helping to address issues such as dangerous riding, nuisance behaviour and the use of e-bikes in criminal activity.
“Together, these initiatives demonstrate our commitment to using innovation, partnership working and proactive policing to improve community safety and respond to the issues that matter most to the public.”
