Demolished Sheffield pub could be replaced by block of 21 flats

A demolished former pub in could be replaced by a three-storey apartment block of social housing.

Sanctuary Housing Association Ltd has applied to Sheffield City Council for planning permission to build 21 apartments on the site of the Shiregreen Arms on Mason Lathe Road, Shiregreen.

The pub was demolished last month.

The block would contain 16 one-bedroom and five two-bedroom flats, available for rent to people aged 55 and over.

The application form says that plans to build four bungalows as well have been dropped.

There has been one objection by a member of the public on parking issues and the loss of trees.

A comment from South Yorkshire Police said: “The vacant, derelict site has historically suffered from ongoing crime, arson, and ASB [anti-social behaviour].

“Regenerating this plot will revitalise the area visually, make good use of the land, and provide affordable housing.”

Shiregreen and Brightside ward councillor Dawn Dale commented: “As one of the local elected members I am in full support of this application, it will bring much-needed housing to the area and improve the space.”
