A SPECIAL event in York this weekend will recognise one of the city's most loved and admired residents.
On Sunday, August 9, members of the popular York Inset Scooter Club and guests will ride from Digby's Cafe overlooking Sherburn-in-Elmet airfield to Derwent Valley Light Railway in Murton Park.
The joint event has been put on in remembrance of VJ day, which on August 15 in the UK marks the end of the Second World War, and in celebration of club president Ken Cooke, who will be celebrating his 101st birthday this weekend.
As reported recently by The Press, Mr Cooke is York's last surviving veteran of the D-Day Normandy landings and was recently awarded the freedom of the city.
He recently attended a service of remembrance in Murton Park to mark the 82nd year since he ran on to Gold Beach as a teenage private along with comrades in the Green Howards regiment on June 6, 1944 .
The Lord Mayor and Civic Party will be present to meet the riders.
Arriving around 11.30am, the group will hold the VJ Day remembrance service at 12.45pm, where Ken will lay a wreath on the war department diesel locomotive stationed there, and the train and guests will set off on a short journey at 1pm.
York Inset Scooter Club is raising funds through the event for the Yorkshire and Scarborough Hospitals charity.
