A FISH and chip chain has announced a delay in the opening of its new North Yorkshire venue.

The eagerly awaited opening of Papa's Fish and Chips' restaurant in Baxtergate, Whitby will no longer take place on Thursday (August 6) due to a delay in building works, the company has said.

The fish and chip shop was set to return to its former site at 76-79 Baxtergate following a major expansion.

Works are ongoing to establish the new space, complete with 250 covers, including 100 on the ground floor, following the sale of a neighbouring property.

At the time, Daniel Maund, director of operations at Papa's Fish and Chips, said: "Whitby is one of the most famous fish and chip destinations in the world, so we’re incredibly proud to bring back the Papa’s experience to the town.

“"We’re passionate about serving high-quality food, creating memorable experiences for families, and continuing the tradition that has defined our business for nearly 60 years.

"This major investment reflects our confidence in Whitby and our long-term commitment to the town."

A spokesperson said they would be updating customers on a new date for the opening as soon as it has confirmation of the works.
