Man jailed for attempted murder after unprovoked Huddersfield stabbing

A Huddersfield man has been jailed after carrying out an unprovoked stabbing that left his victim with life-threatening injuries.

On August 7, 2025, at around 4.20pm, emergency services were called to an address in Huddersfield after reports a man had been stabbed.

The incident occurred at a house on Alder Street, where a man had suffered serious stab injuries in the garden of the property.

Officers attended the property and located Sarmad Khawaja, 42 from Huddersfield, who had been disarmed by other persons present.

He was detained by police arriving on scene and was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The 42-year-old was later charged to appear before Leeds Magistrates’ Court on August 9, 2025.

The victim was taken to hospital to treat his serious injuries.

On Friday (Jul 31), Khawaja was jailed for 20 years at Leeds Crown Court on Friday 31 July for the attack in Huddersfield last year.

DC Thompson of Kirklees District CID, said: “We welcome the sentencing of Khawaja for what was a brutal and unprovoked attack.

“The verdict of the jury finding Khawaja guilty of attempted murder is a stark demonstration of just how tragic the outcome of this assault could have been.

“The victim was left with serious injuries which were life threatening given the violence Khawaja used.

“We hope seeing him sentenced will bring some comfort and closure to the victim."
