The musical adaptation of 1990s cult classic novel Trainspotting will no longer be shown in York after its UK tour was cancelled due to “lower than expected ticket sales”.
Trainspotting: The Musical opened in the West End last month and was due to arrive in at the Grand Opera House in York in November.
The theatrical production is an adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s 1993 novel of the same name, which follows a heroin addict in Edinburgh navigating poverty, friendship and addiction alongside his dysfunctional peers.
A representative for the production said ticketholders will be contacted and refunded after confirming the UK tour had been cancelled.
“The forthcoming UK tour of Trainspotting: The Musical, which was due to begin on October 19, has been cancelled,” they said in a statement to the Press Association.
“We are very grateful to our cast, crew and creative team for their dedication to the production, but the current economic climate has resulted in lower than expected ticket sales.
“Ticketholders will be contacted by their point of purchase with full refund details.
“We apologise for any inconvenience and disappointment this may cause.”

The award-winning Trainspotting franchise has previously been adapted for the stage, but the West End production marked its world debut as a musical.
One of the most popular adaptations include the 1996 hit film, which stars Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle.
Trainspotting also received a 2017 sequel – T2 Trainspotting – which sees Mark Renton return to Edinburgh 20 years on.
