There’s not much better than a chippy tea – and you can get some of the best in the country in Yorkshire.
The iPaper have released their list of the UK’s 25 best fish and chip shops, curated by Daniel Gray – author of award-shortlisted book Food of the Cods – who names his favourite chippies from up and down the country.
Unsurprisingly, three of them are right here in North Yorkshire.
The Scrap Box, Hull Road, Dunnington, York
The Scrap Box in Dunnington have been frying up traditional fish and chips since 2016, and earlier this year they were crowned winners of the National Fish & Chip Awards.
Daniel writes, “It seems counterintuitive to visit beautiful York and then head out of town to a lay-by, yet for the city’s best fish and chips it is necessary. The Scrap Box is where the locals go.
“This is a bright, modern business rooted in old chippy values: sumptuous batter; steaming, crispy yet tender chips; homemade mushy peas in snooker-baize green and lush tartare sauce. And, of course, scraps.”
North Bay Fisheries, Columbus Ravine, Scarborough
Is there a better place to eat fish and chips than by the seaside? This family-run business chippy in Scarborough should be a must-visit stop on your list.
“Turn from the sea and join the queue at North Bay Fisheries, tucked away on a terrace behind Peasholm Park,” recommends Daniel. “From its chrome frying ranges fly golden delights.”
Excelsior Fisheries, Staithes Lane, Staithes
This traditional fish and chip shop is worth the walk up the hill says Daniel, and “staffed by winningly enthusiastic young friers, The Excelsior provides that reward with battered ambrosia.
“A sublime discovery in the one-time home of Captain Cook.”
