OPINION: My work on behalf of local people does not stop despite recess

The summer recess provides a welcome opportunity to spend even more time across Ripon and Nidderdale, meeting residents, businesses and community organisations.

One of the highlights of recent weeks was attending the Great Yorkshire Show. The show remains one of the most important events in our county’s calendar and a fantastic showcase for the farmers, food producers and rural businesses that make Yorkshire such a special place. During my visit, I met a wide range of organisations and constituency businesses including the NFU, CLA, Whittaker's Gin, Fodder, Morrisons, Yockenthwaite Farm and local producers from across our region.

While there was much to celebrate, many conversations focused on the challenges facing our rural economy. Farmers and agricultural businesses raised concerns about future support schemes, planning issues, rising costs and the need for greater certainty from Government. These are issues I will continue to raise in Westminster because agriculture remains the backbone of many communities across Ripon and Nidderdale.

Community safety is also a priority. I recently met North Yorkshire Police Chief Constable Tim Forber at force headquarters in Northallerton to discuss neighbourhood policing, crime prevention, shoplifting, online crime and support for victims. It was encouraging to hear about the work being undertaken to keep our communities safe, while also discussing the pressures police forces face as crime continues to evolve. I will continue to work closely with North Yorkshire Police and raise local concerns wherever needed.

Closer to home, I was delighted to attend the reopening of Ripon Workhouse Museum following its major restoration project. The investment in this important historic site has created an outstanding visitor experience while preserving a vital part of Ripon’s heritage. The museum is a fantastic asset for the city, and I encourage residents and visitors alike to see the transformation for themselves.

I have also been meeting local employers, including a recent visit to Storehouse Kitchen in Ripon. Speaking with owner and head c hef Iain Wilkinson, we discussed the pressures facing independent hospitality businesses, including rising costs, energy prices, VAT and wider employment challenges. Hospitality businesses contribute enormously to our local economy, support jobs and attract visitors to our area, and I will be raising his concerns directly with Ministers.

Although Parliament is in recess, I will continue visiting communities across the constituency, meeting residents, supporting local organisations and championing everything Ripon and Nidderdale has to offer.
