A North Yorkshire town has been named one of the best places to live by the coast in the UK.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea has made the Sunday Times’ list of the top 25 seaside places to live.

Tim Palmer, one of the main judges and writers behind the annual Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide, hailed Saltburn "Yorkshire's most charming seaside resort. (Sorry, Whitby.)”

He said Saltburn, where the average house price is £250,800, has been “revitalised since the pandemic and is now a bustling place full of independent shops and cafés”.

“Everything is walkable and there’s a reliable choice of schools and homes, but you will have to compete for a house in one of the popular Victorian 'jewel streets' (Emerald, Diamond, Pearl etc), which were designed to give as many as possible a sea view.”

Saltburn was named fourth in the list, behind Troon in South Ayrshire, Aberaeron in Ceredigion and Ballycastle in Co Antrim.

It comes after the Sunday Times named Saltburn as one of its best places to live in the UK for 2026.

York was also named in the newspaper’s list, with judges saying the historic city is a “beautiful, beguiling place”.

Judges praised York for its “jaw-dropping” buildings and described it as a “liveable city that hits the sweet spot for work-life balance”.
