A well-known bridge in North Yorkshire will be closing to cars on weekends for the five weeks – plus some other days.

A WELL-KNOWN bridge in North Yorkshire will be closing to cars on weekends for the five weeks – plus other days throughout the school holidays.

Whitby Swing Bridge is set to be open to pedestrians and buses only on weekends until next month, starting from today (August 1).

The closures will coincide with the school holiday weekends (every weekend until September 5 and 6) as well as covering the Whitby Regetta (August 10) and the summer bank holiday (August 31).

A spokesperson for the council said the move aims to improve pedestrian safety and to support the town’s economy.

After these closures, there will be two others including one for the October half term and Whitby Goth Weekends

The closure will take place between 10.30am and 4pm on the respective days.
