Looking for an award-winning, free family day out on the coast this summer? You’re in luck.
Five green spaces across Scarborough, Filey, and Whitby have just been named among the best-kept parks in the country.
The prestigious Green Flag Awards have been revealed, highlighting top-tier parks.
The award-winning coastal spots you can explore for free include:
- Falsgrave Park(Scarborough)
- Peasholm Park(Scarborough)
- South Cliff Gardens(Scarborough)
- Glen and Crescent Gardens(Filey)
- Pannett Park(Whitby)
Two of these local treasures, Pannett Park andSouth Cliff Gardens, were also awarded special** Green Heritage Site Accreditation** for how brilliantly they preserve and share their rich history.
Pannett Park in Whitby was originally gifted to local residents by solicitor Robert Pannett a century ago to save the land from housebuilders.
Today, it is a quiet haven packed with stunning rose gardens, rare trees, a play area, and an ornamental lily pond.
Further down the coast, Scarborough’s South Cliff Gardens boasts fascinating woodland slopes, formal terraces, and Italian gardens. Stretching from Spa Bridge all the way to Holbeck, it is a area steeped in local history.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for parks, Cllr Malcolm Taylor, praised the hard work going on behind the scenes.
“We are incredibly proud to have received these awards. It is credit to the tireless work of our parks team alongside the community groups who help to maintain our green spaces.
“With the summer holidays in full swing, we are encouraging people to make use of their local parks and gardens, which offer a fun, free day out for families looking for something to do.”
Adrian Perry, Chair of the Friends of South Cliff Gardens, added: “We are so lucky to have a garden which dates to the Victorian era, and with the generous support of the National Heritage Lottery Fund we have been able to ensure the historic features are well-maintained and protected.”
