Nuclear submarine programme to deliver 'growth in every postcode', Andy Burnham will say

A nuclear submarine programme - which stretches from Sheffield to Barrow - is an example of how a reindustrialised Britain can provide jobs across the country, Andy Burnham will say today.

The Prime Minister is set to announce the latest instalment in a £8.4bn Dreadnought scheme, which sees nuclear-deterrent subs completed in Barrow, Cumbria.

He will say this is an example of delivering growth in every postcode as thousands of jobs are supported all across the country.

This includes 700 at Sheffield Forgemasters, where the high-tech steel components are made.

These were first announced when John Healey was defence secretary in 2024, as part of an Aukus deal with Australia and the US.

The historic site, which traces its roots back to a blacksmiths during the industrial revolution in the 18th century, has also recently started making gun barrels for Ukraine.

The Rawmarsh and Conisburgh MP has now been made Chancellor under Mr Burnham, and this is expected to herald a rise in defence spending.

The Prime Minister said: “Keeping this country safe is the first responsibility of any government - but security is not only about what we build, it is about who builds it, and who benefits from it.

“The submarines produced in Barrow will protect Britain for decades to come, and the 47,000 jobs and apprenticeships will change lives both in this town and in dozens of places like it.

"British money, spent on British workers, British firms and British skills, in the places that were written off for forty years.

“To every young person across the country, I want you to know that there is a path for you into a reindustrialised Britain, and it starts with the apprenticeships we are funding through this investment today."
