'I can't spake' - Legendary rugby commentary immortalised in lift voiceover ahead of Yorkshire Day

The voice behind a legendary piece of rugby league commentary, described as ‘the most famous and most quoted in history’, will now greet visitors using the lift at Xscape Yorkshire.

Excerpts from Mick Morgan’s internationally renowned dialogue have been rerecorded and added to the automatic lift announcements.

Having been viewed millions of times online and across social media channels, phrases from the ex-Castleford Tigers and England player’s 1994 commentary have become famous soundbites around the world.

Now, in time for Yorkshire Day on August 1, some of the phrases from the infamous Cup Final commentary – “I can’t spake”, “They don’t like it”, “Get ‘em walkin’” and “come on Cas, rub it in” – will be immortalised inside the lift at Xscape.

Jason Warren, Centre Director at Xscape Yorkshire, said: "Yorkshire Day is all about celebrating what makes this county special, and for the people of Castleford you won't find anyone more special and Yorkshire than Mick Morgan.

“His famous cup final commentary truly is one of the best and the phrases have gone on to be heard around the world, shared by generations of sports fans way beyond just those following rugby league.

“We hope Mick’s voice and excerpts from that famous match commentary bring even more joy to people as we immortalise them here in our lift.”

Mick Morgan said: "I've commentated on plenty over the years, but I never thought I'd end up being the voice of a lift! It's a bit of fun for Yorkshire Day, and if it gets people smiling while they're going between floors then that’s good with me. I can't spake... but this might just be the best lift in the world."

To celebrate the launch, Xscape has created 50 limited-edition commemorative “I can’t spake” scarves that will be given away free between 11am and 4pm on Yorkshire Day, giving visitors the chance to take home a keepsake marking the occasion.
