Meet the worker behind Bridlington station's award-winning floral displays

A customer service assistant has transformed his railway station into a vibrant garden.

Andrew Loxton, who works for Northern at Bridlington’s Grade II-listed station, has spent the past decade creating colourful floral displays.

This includes hanging baskets of petunias and begonias, and wooden planters filled with conifers and giant sunflowers.

Mr Loxton said: "I really enjoy watching everything flower each year and finding new ways to improve.

"When everything starts coming up, you feel a great sense of pride."

The 60-year-old took over the gardening duties from a volunteer after they died, despite having no previous gardening experience.

His displays have earned praise and a Gold Award in last year’s Yorkshire in Bloom awards.

Mr Loxton said: "I couldn’t just let it all wither, so I started tending to the flowers and picking up some new ones."

His efforts have expanded to include fruit and vegetable plants, and he is currently experimenting with avocados, olives and lemons.

He arrives early on workdays and sometimes tends to the station’s plants on his days off.

Rachel Osborne, community rail officer at Yorkshire Coast Community Rail Partnership, said: "We are so proud of Andrew and all the work that he does for Bridlington station."
