It’s Yorkshire v Lancashire for Yorkshire Day at York Maze this year.
On Saturday 1 August, Yorkshire’s own superhero Yorkshire-Man will plunge into a giant Yorkshire pudding filled with gravy – but not before he performs a death-defying walk along a narrow beam suspended over the world’s biggest Lancashire hotpot.
The giant Yorkshire pudding is over 6ft in diameter and holds 2000 litres of gravy; while the Lancashire hotpot bowl has similar dimensions and topped with giant slices of potato.
“In recent years I’ve celebrated Yorkshire Day at York Maze by diving into the world’s biggest mug of Yorkshire tea,” said Yorkshire-Man.
“I’ve plunged into a giant Yorkshire pudding filled with gravy, and this year I’m risking it all by attempting to walk a narrow beam above a steaming bowl of Lancashire hotpot.
“As everyone knows, Lancashire hotpot is poisonous to Yorkshire-Man, so I have a giant Yorkshire pudding filled with gravy to dive into as the antidote in case I do come into contact with the Lancashire hotpot!”
Yorkshire Day celebrations at York Maze will start at 1pm with the traditional Yorkshire pudding tossing competition, and the child and adult with the biggest throws will be crowned winners.
At 2:45pm as the finale to the Yorkshire Day celebrations, Yorkshire-Man, clad in his traditional yellow and green Lycra suit and flat cap, will attempt to walk across a narrow beam suspended above the world’s biggest Lancashire hotpot before leaping into the giant Yorkshire pudding filled with gravy.
Everyone visiting York Maze on Yorkshire Day wearing a flat cap will be offered a complimentary mug of freshly brewed Yorkshire Tea.
The New York Brass Band will entertain the crowds with their mix of contemporary tunes and Yorkshire favourites, and there will be a face painter to emblazon cheeks with the Yorkshire Rose.
The theme for York Maze this year is an a-maze-ing tribute to Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, and enjoy a full family day out with 20 other maze and corn themed rides, attractions and shows.
