Police have issued an update after a shot was fired near York Mosque on Bull Lane at 2.19am this morning.
Officers say they have recovered the weapon and it’s been confirmed to be an air rifle.
The 44-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the investigation remains in police custody for questioning.
Extensive searches and enquiries are ongoing, including a trawl of CCTV footage and forensic examinations.
Meanwhile, the Neighbourhood Policing Team is carrying out reassurance patrols in the area.
Superintendent Ed Haywood-Noble, Senior Operational Commander for York and Selby, said: “This incident is clearly deeply concerning for our communities.
“I can give reassurance that police acted swiftly to arrest the suspect, and a thorough investigation is underway. Any suspected offences will be put before the courts.
“Currently the motivation behind the incident is not clear. We are carrying out detailed enquiries to get a better understanding of the circumstances which resulted in the man’s arrest.
“Our Neighbourhood Policing Team are engaging with people who attend York Mosque and who have been left frightened.
“I’d like to thank them, and the wider public, for their patience while our enquiries are in progress. We will be stepping up our patrols across the city in the coming days, for visibility and reassurance for all our communities.”
