Community leaders have been expressing their concerns today after a shot was fired near York Mosque.
The firearm, believed to have been an air rifle, was discharged near the mosque and Islamic Centre on Bull Lane at 2.19am.
A a 44-year-old man from York has been arrested and is being held for questioning.
Faizal Mohamudbuccus, an associate member of York Mosque and a co-founder of York Mosque Community Kitchen, told YorkMix: “People are worried that is this part of a larger movement. We don’t know.
“I’d like to think it’s an isolated incident. People will be apprehensive and nervous.
“I was there this morning at 9 o’clock. This gentleman just came out from one of the flats near the mosque and just said, ‘We’re really sorry to hear what’s happened. Remember, we’re your neighbours. We stand arm in arm.’
“And you know, he didn’t have to say that. He didn’t have to come out, but he did it off his own back. And you know, that was really nice to hear.”
David Skaith, the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire said: “What happened this morning will be upsetting for many people.
“The mosque is an important part of York and a place that means a great deal to those who worship there.
“I’m grateful to North Yorkshire Police for their swift response and for the support and reassurance they are continuing to provide to the community.
“Incidents like this can knock people’s sense of safety, but I know the people of York. When something affects one part of our community, people come together, support each other and show what kind of city we are.”
And York Central MP Rachael Maskell said: “I am grateful to the police, as always, for all that they are doing to support the community and carry out their enquiries, and am currently liaising with them further on this situation.
“It is vital that we ensure everyone is safe, and draw together as a community in light of this shocking incident.
“My thoughts are with the York Mosque community at this time, and am so grateful to all in our city who have expressed their deep concern for them.”
