Signs have been displayed in the windows of O’Neill’s, in Low Ousegate, stating the bar is currently closed for works including replacing outside signs and inside renovations.
Plans from bar operator Mitchells & Butlers Retail Ltd stated the changes would not have an adverse effect on the Grade II-listed building or surrounding city centre conservation area.
City of York Council officers stated the changes had been deemed acceptable after a barrel sign and other features were dropped from the plans.
Approval of plans for the outside of the buildings comes after a separate but related application for renovations to its interior were backed in June.

Those works include the removal of most of the rear and internal walls on the building’s ground floor along with several of its features.
Renovations also include the laying of new, harder-wearing tiles to replace the venue’s wooden floor which has been worn down by heavy footfall.
New booths, an accessible toilet and changes to the bar area were also included in the plans.
Works on the outside of the building are set to include repainting it dark green along with the installation of new signs.

Mitchells & Butlers’ plans stated the works would help to secure the long-term future of the venue.
Applicants stated: “O’Neill’s is a very popular and heavily trafficked venue.
“The property and, in particular, the narrow plot form and elevations to Low Ousegate, make a significant contribution to the character and appearance of the conservation area.
“The ground floor, with its curved windows and central doorway, is a good example of a mid-19th Century shop front.”
Council officers stated the works would enhance the building’s appearance.
They stated: “The proposed works are acceptable following amendments to remove faux planting and floodlights.
“The illuminated trough lights downlighting the sign is a more appropriate level of illumination considering the listed building’s visual appearance.”
