Much-loved Sam Smith's pub in York undergoing renovations for August reopening

RENOVATIONS are underway at a much-loved Sam Smith’s pub in York said to be re-opening in August.
Contractors have been seen at The Wellington Arms, affectionally known as ‘The Welly,’ in Alma Terrace, Fishergate, preparing for the ‘Big Day’.
Like many Sam Smith’s pubs, The Wellington Arms, has been closed for some time.
The Welly closed in November 2024, leading to a campaign to re-open the pub, including the gathering of a petition.

In recent weeks, posts on social media have said a management couple has been found for traditional back street pub. They are said to be publicans from Pontefract.
After initially saying the re-opening would be by the end of July, posts now say mid-August.

Earlier this week, contractors were seen inside the pub.
Former Press chief reporter Mike Laycock told the Press: “You can see paint pots inside, paintings are off the walls, there are decorators’ covers on the floor, including in the front doorway, and I could see a roll of new carpet or lino ready for laying.”
The work and re-opening comes as Tadcaster-based Sam Smith’s brewery has re-opened or is re-opening other pubs in the area.
Last week, The Tankard Inn at Rufforth reopened, which is managed by Paula Dawson from the Paula’s Kitchen cafe, at the other side of the village.
The flagship Angel and White Horse in Bridge Street, Tadcaster, is also said to be re-opening in August.
