Popular York venue presented with award as CAMRA's Cider Pub of the Year

A popular York pub has been recognised by CAMRA for its cider.
The Three Legged Mare is York CAMRA’s Cider Pub of the Year - an award it also received in 2024.
At the weekend, members packed the pub in High Petergate as it received a plaque to recognise its success.
York CAMRA Branch chairman Chris Tregellis said: “The Three Legged Mare is one of those great survivors in a period of considerable change in the pub scene.

“One of the reasons is its reputation for cider as well as beer.”
Drinking a Stamford Reserve on presentation night, Chris praised the ciders on offer.
He said: “This one slipped down very easily despite its 7.4 per cent strength so I had to remind myself to consume slowly!”
Chris continued: “Thus is CAMRA Cider Month and therefore an appropriate time to enjoy a cider during the hot summer days.

“Being CAMRA it's the real cider that is appreciated rather than the cider from concentrate that can often only have to legally minimum 35 per cent apple content.
“In a time of fairly costly pints it's a lot to pay for mostly water and sugar so look out for the real stuff and what better place to try it than the Three Legged Mare?"
Pub manager, Jack Merry, whom Chris says is “another great survivor", received the award.
Jack, who began working in pubs aged 21, says he will be one of the longest serving pub landlords in York. He turns 60 on Boxing Day.
The presentation night was a success, with people enjoying cider, real ale and folk music.
Jack continued: “It’s our second Cider Pub of the Year Award in three years. We tend to have a dozen ciders on. We do the classics, Ampleforth, Old Rosie, the Lilley’s range, all rotating ciders.”
The pub, affectionately known as the ‘wonkey donkey,’ also offers entertainment every evening, including live music, open mic nights and pub quizzes.
Jack is grateful to CAMRA, thanking them for the recognition which has boosted trade at The Three Legged Mare.
He added: “Since news of the award came out, word of mouth has led us to sell lots more cider.”
A previously reported, the Cider Pub of the Year in 2025 was the Slip Inn in Clementhorpe.
The 2026 York CAMRA City Pub of the Year went to the Last Drop Inn at Colliergate, York.
The White Bear Inn at Stillington is Town and Country Pub for 2026.
The Club of the Year was York Sports Club at Clifton Park, on Shipton Road, York.
