Ripon to celebrate Yorkshire Day with flags, parades and tradition

Ripon is set to go all out for Yorkshire Day and St Wilfrid's Procession.

On August 1, the city will be celebrating with a double dose of county pride.

Ripon BID has installed 50 Yorkshire flags across key points in the city centre, thanks to the help of Ripon Men's Shed, Otley BID, and Cllr Chris Hardisty.

The flags aim to add a touch of white-rose pride to the city.

Ripon, located at the centre of Yorkshire, is known for its rich heritage, independent spirit, and strong sense of identity.

The city is home to an ancient cathedral, the nightly Hornblower tradition, and various family-run attractions.

Alongside Yorkshire Day, Ripon will host its famous St Wilfrid's Procession, featuring vibrant floats, music, and Wilfrid himself parading through the city.

A special Hornblowing ceremony will take place at 9pm, with all four Hornblowers performing together, marking the 1,140-year-old tradition.

Visitors are also invited to join Walter the Whippet on a trail through the city, exploring Ripon's heritage at their own pace.

Local journalist Tim Flanagan has written a special poem titled Top of the Tykes, capturing Ripon's Yorkshire spirit.
