A couple of World Cup drinks has led to a former delivery driver being banned from the roads – the second time he has lost his licence.
Police pulled Oluwaseun Adewole, 31, over on Tang Hall Lane, York, on June 14 because they were concerned about the way he appeared unable to stay on his side of the road, said Antony Farrell, prosecuting.
He was unable to follow their instruction when they told him to get into their car and had clearly been drinking.
A roadside breath test gave a reading of 72 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, and a second test at a police station gave a reading of 58 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, said Mr Farrell. The legal limit is 35.
Adewole, of Monument Close, Holgate, York, pleaded guilty to drink driving and driving on a provisional licence without a supervisor or L-plates.
He was banned from driving for 15 months, fined £350 and ordered to pay a £140 statutory surcharge and £85 prosecution costs.
Duty solicitor Kevin Blount said Adewole had been watching a World Cup match and had had a “couple of pints".
He had had his full licence cancelled when he was convicted of driving without insurance within two years of passing his driving test.
He had had insurance but it was only for private use and he didn’t realise he had to change it when he got a job as a delivery driver to include business use.
He got a provisional licence, but thought because he had passed his driving test he didn’t need L-plates or a supervisor. He had since got a job as a carer, said Mr Blount.
