'Innovative solution' developed in Harrogate to enable schools to go smartphone-free

An innovative Harrogate-based firm is helping primary schools go smartphone-free across North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Council-owned technology firm and digital infrastructure specialist NYnet has been working on a solution developed specifically for schools as national policy turns increasingly against pupils using smartphones at school.

The answer is lockable smartphone pouches which are now to be adopted by a primary school federation in North Yorkshire, the first in the county to do so.

Working in partnership with Starbeck-based nynet and North Yorkshire Education Services, Heritage Coast Federation is to introduce lockable smartphone pouches for its Year 5 and 6 pupils, taking a proactive approach to creating a smartphone-free environment before smartphones become an issue in school.

Headteacher Helen Thompson said that, like many primary schools, very few Heritage Coast Federation pupils currently bring smartphones into school.

But, she added, as increasing numbers of children walk to and from school independently, parents often want the reassurance that their child can contact them before and after school.

"We don't have a smartphone problem and we'd like to keep it that way,” said Mrs Thompson.

"This is about normalising a smartphone-free school culture before smartphones become an issue.”

The lockable phone pouches form part of a wider range of solutions to help schools respond to emerging challenges, meet the latest Government guidance and create safer, more focused learning environments.

Chantal Anselme of nynet, said: “Having worked with more than 200 schools across North Yorkshire as their trusted technology and network partner, we've developed a practical, education-focused solution that supports both pupils and staff.

"We work closely with each school to plan, implement and support the solution, ensuring it integrates smoothly into school life.”

Heritage Coast Federation is a school partnership which links two village primary schools near Whitby: Fylingdales C of E Primary School and Hawsker-cum-Stainsacre C of E Primary School.
