A 26-year-old woman has died and five other people left injured after a crash on a main road in North Yorkshire.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene after the crash on the A170 between Wrelton and Pickering in the early hours of Wednesday (July 29), North Yorkshire Police said.

She was driving a Volkswagen Polo travelling away from Pickering which crashed with a black Audi A4 travelling towards Pickering at about 1.30am, the force said.

A police spokesperson said the family of the woman, who has not been named, are being supported by specially trained officers.

They said the five occupants of the Audi A4 were all taken to hospital for “treatment to injuries of varying severity”, adding: “Non are thought to be life-threatening at this stage.”

The A170 remained closed for several hours while specialist officers carried out crash investigation work.

Police are urging anyone who saw the collision or either vehicle travelling on the A170 before to come forward.

“We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have dashcam footage or CCTV recordings that could assist our enquiries,” the police spokesperson said.
